Why on Earth would you suggest using a foot (which has been on the bathroom floor, walked on streets with pesticides and animal feces, etc.) to lift a toilet seat? That isn't well-mannered.

My(no longer) S/O always left the seat up, so I would put it down for me and when finished put it back up for him. I don't thhink he even noticed. Then one night he went in the dark, sat down and 'fell in'. I think I put my point across.

I am one of the few women who doesn't mind seeing the toilet seat up in a shared bathroom.

Scenario #1: Seat up

This means I know that the man who used the toilet before me was courteous enough to lift the seat before urinating.

Scenario #2: Seat down

This means I have no idea if the man who used the toilet before me politely returned the seat to its down position, or if he left the seat down, having never lifted it at all.

I prefer scenario #1.

@A.Midgorden:
As I see it, women need to go to both urinate and defecate sitting down. Men need to urinate standing up and defecate sitting down. That means that the toilet seat needs to be down most of the time except for when men need to urinate, therefore it is polite to keep it down most of the time.

Thanks for posting proper manners expected of men in a shared bathroom by both sexs. After numerous requests from me for him to put the seat down, His question is who made it the males task to put the seat down when it could esily be a womens task to lift the seat for a man before she leaves. He still would like to know so if you know how the ordeal got started with being it being the expectation of the male do let me know so I can tell him.

Try: "You know, John, I really don't wish to get into that right now, it may well leave both of us in an upset state. You understand, don't you (smile and start moving away)? Hope you don't mind." Ulternatively, if you really "hate" such discussion, you may try,after the first sentence above. "It's as likely my fault, as anybody's, please forgive me." Introduce another less inflamatory subject, such as the weather and soon move on with, "nice to meet you again."
